Recovery Isn’t Rest – Why Active Recovery for Huskies Matters

When I first got into Canicross, I thought recovery days meant doing nothing. But with Huskies – just like with my own ultra training – I quickly learned that active recovery for Huskies isn’t the same as simply resting.
Huskies are born athletes, but that doesn’t mean they recover magically. In fact, their drive often hides fatigue. That’s why active recovery is the secret weapon that keeps them healthy and eager.
Why “Doing Nothing” Isn’t Recovery
Recovery isn’t laziness. Muscles don’t grow during the run – they grow in the hours and days after, when micro-tears repair and the body adjusts. For Huskies, who love to move, stillness can even create stiffness and restlessness.
Recovery is the phase where the body adapts:
Muscles rebuild stronger
Joints re-align
Energy stores refill
❌ If recovery = lying still, stiffness builds up.
✅ If recovery = moving smartly, progress accelerates.

Active Recovery in Practice
This is what I do with Pepper & Iluq on recovery days:
Short sniff walks – movement without intensity, letting them set the pace.
Mobility drills – gentle joint rotations, balance exercises on the BosuBall or Balance Board.
Massage or stretching – not every day, but when I feel tightness.
Hydration & nutrition – recovery fuel matters as much as training fuel.

Sometimes I joke that Iluq complains more about recovery days than I do. He howls at the door like I’m torturing him. But in reality, these pauses are what keep him strong when the snow comes.
Why Active Recovery for Huskies Is Non-Negotiable
In the end, active recovery for Huskies is training. Not a pause from it. The days we take it easy are the days that make all the others possible.
